Gable might have had the fatter part but Tracy died the “slowest, most lingering death in history,” according to Gable. Time after time he seemed to have finally expired only to weakly open an eye, manage a wan smile, and go on living for another few seconds. He was in Gable’s arms for the duration, and Clark was hard put to react believably. During one memorable take when Tracy was finding it particularly hard to give up the ghost, Gable dropped Tracy’s head on the canvas with a hard thud and exclaimed, “Die, goddamn it Spence!
